CITY of ALAMEDA CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS THIS WEEK

TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 6:30 PM SPEAK BEFORE CLOSED SESSION

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 5:00 PM SPEAK BEFORE VOTE / AGENDA IS HERE.

Where’s the fire?

Why the rush to approve Mr. Russo’s proposal???

THE ISSUE YOU WANT TO SPEAK OUT ON

  • Fire and Police Contracts expire December 2017 (in 2.5 years)
  • City Manager Russo recently negotiated 5-year contract extensions of our fire and police unions, and put it on the April 29th City Council Meeting for approval
  • Russo did not include our elected City Treasurer Kevin Kennedy and City Auditor Kevin Kearney (“The Kevins”) in the negotiation process
  • Russo gave The Kevins and our city council exactly 2 weeks (!)–during tax season—to assess the contract extension.
  • City Council Member Oddie and the Alameda Fire Union and Firefighters are pulling out the stops to get this approved: promoting it in newspapers and online in social media.
  • Despite Mr. Oddie’s credentials (B.A. Finance, MBA) and in his recent op-ed, he got the numbers all wrong: Russo’s extension doesn’t reduce our OPEB liability “by $47 million over the next 30 years”.
  • In fact, after 30 years of implementing this proposal, the city will still have $252.6 million in unfunded OPEB* liability that we cannot afford

*OPEB: Other Post Employment Benefits

OVER THE NEXT 2 YEARS, WE NEED TO:
1)   CAREFULLY ASSESS OUR BUDGET
2)   CAREFULLY CRAFT PUBLIC SAFETY CONTRACTS  IN CONTEXT OF OUR BUDGET FORECASTS (See graphics below)
WHY?  Read on.
THE CITY BUDGET PROJECTIONS SHOW THAT DEFICITS BEGIN BY THIS SAME TIME NEXT YEAR.

SOMETHING’S VERY WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE.
80% (!!) OF OUR BUDGET IS SPENT ON PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICES!

 . . . AND SOMETHING IS VERY, VERY  WRONG
IN OUR CITY FIRE AGENCY.

Some firefighters earning $90K/year, earn another 40%  ($36K) in overtime pay per year!

Our city leadership and management should WANT to know what’s wrong before approving any extensions to the existing contract!

ATTEND WEDNESDAY’S CITY COUNCIL MEETING!

SPEAK OUT!!!

PROTECT OUR CITY’S FUTURE!!

Bob Sullwold is doing a great job reporting on why our city continues to head in directions that do not make sense. He has sources, he explains past events that tie to current ones, and he’s a good writer.

HEAD OVER TO BOB’S BLOG HERE where he’s written a great expose on the how we got and lost the Rockerfeller Grant.

Bob has coined the most apt logo ever for our city: Fire Knows Best

Let’s help him get that changed by helping as many Alamedans become informed as possible.

Please read and share Bob’s blog articles far and wide.

Speak Truth to Power

Written May 28, 2012 by Janet Gibson, Alameda resident & retired teacher

I feel that most people want to believe that firemen, as well as policemen, are “our friends”.   It is, therefore, quite alarming to hear a number of Alamedans express fear and concern when it comes to our local Fire Department.

When residents. . .  .

*  know about the callous act of our firefighters “not lifting a hand” while a despondent Raymond Zack waded to his drowning;

*  learn that the Fire Fighters Union has contributed almost $70,000 in the past several years to our City Council members;

*  observe Alameda Fire Fighters and their Union being the major supporters and contributors to the passage of Measure C:     assertively knocking at voter’s doors,  running telephone banks,  distributing campaign signs; sending $12,000 mailers

*  experience engine and ladder trucks with lights and blaring sirens driving past the homes of known opposition bloggers,     without an observable emergency response event;

.  .  .  .it is not hard to understand the intimidation being felt by a number of people.

As the June 5th Vote  nears, people who oppose Measure C feel particularly vulnerable.   Scores of “No on C” signs are being taken from the lawns of private homes.  One homeowner reports that four consecutive signs have been stolen from her yard.    Another neighbor expressed the fear that fire fighters might not be as diligent in responding to an emergency call, if they saw a “No Sign” in front of her home.

What a sad state of affairs. . for community members to lose confidence in their public servants!  The perception exists that our fire fighters’ powerful union has taken over City Hall.  The public is not against unions who bargain collectively for members.  The public is against the excessive use of that power. The public is not against our civil servants having good salaries and benefits.  They are against excessively high salaries/benefits and employees who work only for their own self-interest.

We must not be afraid to “Speak Truth to Power”.    VOTE NO on C   Inform yourself: www.AlamedaNoOnC.com

Mayor, orchestrate the meetings much?

Seriously.

Mayor Gilmore says she doesn’t want to ‘put the guy on the spot’ but asks some guy to come to the podium and explain the golf plans….and the guy has a multi-page speech prepared.…yeah. Right: THAT’s putting him ‘on the spot”. Orchestrate and manipulate meeting much, Mayor?   She has since her first meeting on December 28, 2010, in which she lied to fellow council members, dissembled about the agenda, had hired Meyers Nave prior to the meeting, and surreptitiously fired then City Manager Ann Marie Gallant .

What a joke. How can she NOT be wholly embarrassed? (hint: arrogance).

And WTF?  How can GilBonTamJo sit there and NOT address the very serious implications brought to their attention by those that asked WHY and HOW they could have taken money in recent months (2011!!!) from the Alameda Firefighters Association Political Action Committee into their 2010 political campaign accounts WHILE they were negotiating the contract with the firefighters?!

The failure to respond confirms the impropriety. For certainly, those operating with moral principles are confident and will speak to any complaint, would welcome sunshine. But failing to respond, well folks, THAT indicates confirmation of trading influence, of corruption.

It looks like Mayor Gilmore, Vice Mayor Bonta, City Council Members Tam and Johnson have been bought by the IAFF Local 689 in exchange for a fat retroactive contract for our underperforming, overpaid firefighters.

Peddling influence much, Mayor?!

SOMEONE NEEDS TO SAY: ADDRESS OUR DAMN CONCERNS.  ANSWER OUR DAMN QUESTIONS!
