And who wouldn’t? With the spate of illegal activity down at City Hall last week (the votes to place Gallant and Highsmith on administrative leave were illegal, as was the firing of Christina Baines), I suppose it follows.
Mayor Gilmore placed this little item on tomorrow’s meeting agenda: she wants to move the public comment on non-agenda items (Oral Communications) section at city council meetings to the beginning of each meeting and limit the total amount of time allocated to our comments to 15 minutes.
This effectively limits a city of 70,000 to five speakers talking for 3 minutes each for every city council meeting every two weeks.
(25 meetings per year) x 5 speakers = 125 speakers per year.
125 speakers x 3 minutes = 375 minutes per year
That’s 0.18% of the population…if no one speaks twice in a year.
That’s .005 minutes per Alamedan per year. (!)
Clearly, she doesn’t put much stock in the concerns of those she’s meant to represent. She doesn’t much care to learn from us… Oh, right; like last week: she’s got her own agenda and just wants to focus on it (ramrod it through) undistracted by the vagaries that we find critical for her to consider.
♫♫Ain’t no sunshine…♫♫
MAYOR GILMORE IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE VALUES THAT ALAMEDANS ESTEEM.
Trustworthiness. Honesty. Reliability. Prudence.
Alamedans: We have massive intellectual capital in this city. Exercise it now!
This is not about whether you voted for Gilmore or not. In fact, if you did, you should be doubly outraged here! And it’s not about whether you think Gallant has done a good job or not.
IT’S ABOUT GILMORE BEHAVING ENTITLED AND ABOVE THE LAW.
And it’s about the very fabric of our city. Mayor Gilmore has immediately shown us–out of the gate–how she intends to run our city: like a petty tyranny. If you don’t think there will be more of where this came from, you’re simply not paying attention.
SPEAK OUT. THE TIME IS NOW. IF NOT NOW, WHEN?
Tuesday’s City Council Meeting, January 4th, may be the last night for more than 5 of us to speak off-agenda at a City Council meeting: we can be confident that Mayor Gilmore, Vice Mayor Bonta, and Councilmember Tam will vote to approve action-item 8-A “Consider Changing the Order of the City Council Agendas”.
If this first week of illicit mayoral activity doesn’t raise your ire, nothing will.
IT’A TIME TO COME OUT OF YOUR PUBLIC OPINION CLOSET AND SPEAK OUT.
Your ideas, your opinions, matter. Mayor Gilmore has it all wrong: politicians don’t lead, they follow. They follow us. They are supposed to optimize our city for us, representing what we think is best for ourselves. It’s not Father Knows Best, or rather: It’s not GilBonTam Knows Best. It’s we the people know best. And the only way elected officials can do their best work is if we voice our opinions and make them do their best work.
“President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is said to have told progressive activists, after listening to their proposals, ‘I agree. I am all for your plan. Now make me do it.'” – Jamie Court
Note: The City’s agenda says it’s a special meeting that starts at 6PM. It’s not. The agenda they’ve published here is for the regular meeting that starts at 7 PM.
